Day 03 : Mumbai Temple Tour:

Today, we will visit the most important temples of Mumbai, thereby, starting off our Mumbai Temple Tour in earnest. The temples that we will visit today include the Siddhi Vinayak Temple, Shree Mahalakshmi Temple, and Walkeshwar Temple. All the three temples that we visit today are located in South West Mumbai, close to the coastline.

The first temple that we visit is the Siddhi Vinayak Temple or Mandir. Located in Prabhadevi, Mumbai, the Siddhi Vinayak Temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and devotees firmly believe that the deity grants the wishes of all who pray there. The donations pouring in from the devotees whose wishes have been granted, has made the Siddhi Vinayak Temple in Prabhadevi, Mumbai, the richest temple in the vicinity.

The second temple that we visit on this Mumbai temple tour is the Shree Mahalakshmi Temple. This temple has a very interesting legend associated with its idols. It is believed that years before, when Mumbai was still a cluster of islands, an engineer was trying to link two islands, but kept failing.

Goddess Lakshmi instructed him to search for her idols in the creek and retrieve them first. He did as instructed and kept the retrieved idols on a hillock by the coast, and went on to successfully link the islands. Later, he gathered funds and built the temple for the idols of Goddess Mahalakshmi, Goddess Mahakali and Goddess Mahasaraswathi.

The third temple that we will visit on this Mumbai Temple tour is the Walkeshwar Temple and the Banganga Tank. This shiva lingam in this temple and the Banganga tank are believed to date back to the Ramayana - as per legend, Rama paused here in his pursuit of Ravana to save his wife Sita.

He made a shiva lingam out of sand and worshipped it for guidance. And, when thirsty, he shot an arrow which resulted in the making of a new fresh water spring - the water from that spring fills the Banganga Tank. Devotees from far and wide visit the temple for worshipping in front of the original lingam.

This Mumbai Temple tour ends with a drop back at the hotel.
